Valentine’s day — a day to express one’s love as loud as possible.

But as contract sewing experts, rather than compete for the highest decibel or the gaudiest arrangement of flowers and chocolates, we like to promote ourselves with the tools of our trade, which in this case happen to be fabric and color.

And what better way to make yourself seen than with an American National Standard certified High-Visibility Safety Apparel (HVSA) outfit?

Love is in the air…for HVSA Vests

LIFE SAVERS

Ok, it might look a bit ridiculous on a potential courter with romantic inclinations, but consider this: every day, workers across America and the globe rely on HVSA to keep them safe while on the job.

From crossing guards and cops to delivery drivers and construction workers, brightly-colored clothing and accessories are much more than a bold fashion statement but can mean the difference between life and death.

THREE HVSA CATEGORIES

HVSA vests are an essential part of any road-emergency-vehicle kit.

HVSA vests are an essential part of any road-emergency-vehicle kit.

A lot of people need to wear HVSA, but not all hi-vis gear is the same. The National Standard serves as a guide in the design and construction of HVSA products, to ensure that workers are adequately protected in low-visibility environments. There are three different garment categories, each tailored to the type of work being performed, the environment, and its hazards:

  1. Type O: Off-road.

  2. Type R: Roadway or temporary traffic control.

  3. Type P: Public safety activities.

Despite what you might think, the three classes don’t categorize by garment type but, rather, by the amount of reflective material, the width of the reflective material (i.e. stripes), and the ratio of background materials.

WHO’S BRIGHT IDEA?

The people behind this…(ahem) bright idea are members of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), a group of protective equipment and clothing manufacturers.

To celebrate 20 years of the National Standard, the ISEA produced a video about the extraordinary history of HVSA, “Seeing the Light: High Visibility Apparel's Vital Role in Safety.”

The video takes a look at how high-vis PPE got started and eventually become a life-saving requirement for safety-minded companies and workers across the globe.
